Weekly Topics
Kindergarten
We will continue to work on retelling, characters, setting, main events in the story, and beginning, middle, and end in our whole group lessons and carry this into our Guided reading lessons. We will continue with word work- making the sounds for the letters and blending the sounds together to say the word (example- d-u-ck, duck). We will work on vowel pairs ai, ay, ea,and ee.
1st Grade
First grade groups will continue to focus on reading strategies we use that will help when reading text. We will focus on looking at the picture for help. This will go along with how good readers use photographs and illustrations to better understand the text. We will check the first part of the word and think about what makes sense, sounds right and check the illustration to verify that we are correct. We will work on taking words apart- listening and sounding out parts, so we are reading parts of the words rather than letter by letter (as this applies) . We will continue to monitor (self correct, reread, confirm) and clarify our reading . We will continue to read poems in whole group to practice these strategies, as well as practice fluency, looking through words, and working on punctuation (period, question mark, exclamation mark, and quotation marks). We will focus on questioning during our whole group and guided reading group lessons, as well as spiral back to retelling, summarizing, main idea and details of a story. This week our focus will be on predicting, inferring and drawing conclusions.
2nd Grade
We will think about how good readers use prior knowledge to compare and contrast the main topic of informational texts.
